With the EU AI Act incoming this summer, the bloc lays out its plan for AI governance

The European Union has taken the wraps off the structure of the new AI Office, the ecosystem-building and oversight body that’s being established under the bloc’s AI Act. The risk-based regulatory framework for artificial intelligence is expected to enter into force before the end of July — following the regulation’s final approval by EU lawmakers last week. The AI Office will take effect on June 16.

UK Publishers urge action to control generative AI

UK local and national news publishers have asked for protection from the next government from generative AI companies taking their content without payment. As the UK goes to the polls on 4 July, the News Media Association (which represents most UK local and national news publishers) has set out its own “election manifesto” of policy priorities.

Washington pushes for new AI rules protecting artists as Hollywood backlash mounts

Senators are pushing to introduce a bill as early as June that would set rules governing the use of AI in the music and movie industries, an effort that coincides with new AI tensions roiling Hollywood. The NO FAKES Act — which stands for Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe — is a bipartisan proposal that would stop individuals or companies from using AI to produce an unauthorized digital replica of their likeness or their voice.

Financial Times chief executive John Ridding has told other news publishers they “have leverage and should insist on payment” from AI companies. His words for the industry at the WAN-IFRA World News Media Congress in Copenhagen came one month after the Financial Times became the first UK news publisher to announce a licensing deal with OpenAI.

New music industry trade body The Web3 Music Association launches

The Web3 Music Association (W3M), a new global music industry trade body that aims to “facilitate industry-wide research and development” has officially launched. W3M brings together prominent entities from the music, finance and technology sectors to “collaborate, explore and harness advanced technologies” including artificial intelligence, blockchain and mixed reality.

News Corp Inks OpenAI Licensing Deal Potentially Worth More Than $250 Million

Content from News Corp publications — which include the Wall Street Journal — is coming to OpenAI under a new multiyear licensing deal. Under the partnership, OpenAI has permission to display content from News Corp’s publications in response to user questions and to enhance its products, with the “ultimate objective of providing people the ability to make informed choices based on reliable information and news sources,” according to News Corp.

AI Image Generator Avoids Copyright Issues by Training on Corrupted Photos

A research team led by the University of Texas has come up with a model called Ambient Diffusion which they claim “gets around” the issue of copyright and AI image generators by feeding the model images that have pixels missing — in some cases as much as 93%. “Early efforts suggest the framework is able to continue to generate high-quality samples without ever seeing anything that’s recognizable as the original source images,” reads a press release.

Audius partners with Music Reports to power rights clearances for music publishers

San Francisco-based blockchain-powered music platform Audius has partnered with rights administration platform Music Reports to power the licensing of rights and payments to music publishers through its Songdex Marketplace opt-in licensing platform. The new partnership follows Audius’ launch of its music marketplace last year, which provides a platform for its 6 million users to support artists with direct payments.

LinkedIn Begins Labeling AI-Generated Content

LinkedIn has announced it will begin adding labels to in-stream content created by generative AI so its users better understand the posts they are interacting with. To carry out the labeling process, the business-to-business social network is partnering with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a project that aims to develop technical standards for certifying the origins of digital content.
