Global royalty collections hit $12.7b in 2022

Within the report, the Paris-headquartered organization provides what it calls a “comprehensive” overview of data and analysis of global royalty collections across all repertoires. Music collections were the largest segment, with publisher and songwriter royalties collected by their societies globally growing by a record 28% YoY in 2022 to reach €10.8 billion.

PRS for Music Scores the ‘Largest Single Royalty Payment in Its History’

UK-based royalty collection and distribution pillar PRS for Music announces a record quarterly royalty distribution of $288.7 million (£239 million), a 13% increase compared to last October. The largest single royalty payment in PRS for Music’s 109-year history, over 4,000 members received their first royalty payments this month.

Deezer and Sacem to explore ‘artist-centric’ publishing payouts 

This morning Deezer has announced a partnership with French collecting society Sacem to “explore the artist-centric monetization model for publishing rights in music streaming.” That means “new ways of rewarding the value songwriters and publishers create” that “aims to ensure fairer compensation for publishing rights owners.”

Spotify changing how it pays artists starting in 2024

Spotify is planning to make significant changes to its royalty payout model in Q1 2024 – with the intent to move USD $1 billion in royalty payments over the next five years to ‘legitimate’ artists and rightsholders. Spotify has been discussing details of its blueprint for the new royalty model with various music rightsholders in recent weeks.

In a note to shareholders today (October 24) , HSF’s board said that “following substantive engagement with a number of parties”, it did not receive a “Superior Offer” as part of the ‘go shop’ process. HSF’s board said in a shareholder update that it had “received feedback through the process [from] a number of the parties assessed that they could not justify paying a higher price” than the $440 million offer from HSC.

TikTok Copyright Takedowns More Than Tripled in 2022

As short-form video content platform TikTok continues to battle criticism from multiple fronts, the company revealed its latest data on copyright and trademark content removal requests in 2022, which have more than tripled from the previous year. In fact, the numbers from July to December 2022 far outshine and nearly double those from the first half of that year.
