News Group Says A.I. Chatbots Heavily Rely on News Content

The News Media Alliance, a trade group that represents more than 2,200 publishers released research on Tuesday that it said showed that developers outweigh articles over generic online content to train the technology, and that chatbots reproduce sections of some articles in their responses. The group argued that the findings show that the A.I. companies violate copyright law.

The MLC has paid out over $1.5bn to songwriters to date

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) reports that it has now distributed over $1.5 billion in royalties to songwriters in the past two and half years since launching full operations. As of Monday (October 30), the MLC said it has already met every milestone set by Congress in the MMA and distributed over $1.5 billion in royalties.

Artists Lose First Round of Copyright Infringement Case Against AI Art Generators

Artists suing generative artificial intelligence art generators have hit a stumbling block in a first-of-its-kind lawsuit over the uncompensated and unauthorized use of billions of images downloaded from the internet to train AI systems, with a federal judge’s dismissal of most claims. Claims against the companies for infringement, right of publicity, unfair competition and breach of contract were dismissed, though they will likely be reasserted.

Google agrees to invest up to $2 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic

Google has agreed to invest up to $2 billion in the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, a spokesperson for the startup said on Friday. Google is already an investor in Anthropic, and the fresh investment would underscore a ramp-up in its efforts to better compete with Microsoft a major backer of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, as Big Tech companies race to infuse AI into their applications.

Shutterstock Integrates AI Into Its Library of 700 Million Images

Stock image library site Shutterstock is joining the growing list of image providers turning to artificial intelligence to stem the tide of unauthorized AI-generated images. On Thursday, Shutterstock announced the integration of a new generative AI tool called Creative AI into its library of over 700 million images, allowing users to create customized AI-generated works that are appropriately licensed.

Hipgnosis Investors Vote for Reorganization, Reject $440 Million Catalog Sale

Hipgnosis Songs Fund is facing an uncertain future as some 83.2% of its investors voted Thursday that a new board make major structural changes to the overextended company.  Investors also rejected a proposal by its leadership to shore up its finances by selling off around $440 million of its 65,000-song catalog to a sister fund backed by Blackstone.
