For the first time, however, one of Disney’s marquee characters — Mickey himself — is set to enter the public domain. “Steamboat Willie,” the 1928 short film that introduced Mickey to the world, will lose copyright protection in the United States and a few other countries at the end of next year, prompting fans, copyright experts and potential Mickey grabbers to wonder: How is the notoriously litigious Disney going to respond?

Midjourney Founder Admits to Using a ‘Hundred Million’ Images Without Consent
Midjourney founder David Holz has admitted that his company did not receive consent for the hundreds of millions of images used to train its AI image generator, outraging photographers and artists. Holz says that Midjourney’s dataset was built from “a big scrape of the internet.” “We use the open data sets that are published and train across those. And I’d say that’s something that 100% of people do,” he adds.

Nearly $50m has now been withdrawn using Sony Music’s Cash Out and Real Time Advances features
According to a 2022 recap of the Artists Forward initiative, published on Sony Music’s website this week, the Legacy Unrecouped Balance Program “has already paid through millions of dollars to thousands of our long-standing creators”, and that “over time, thousands of artists globally are poised to benefit from Legacy Unrecouped Balance support as they become eligible for the program”.

PUBG Mobile, a free mobile game that’s been downloaded over a billion times outside of China, is launching its own label, called ‘Beat Drop’. PUBG has already been releasing its own original music since 2020 via a virtual band called POWER 4 (see video below), and the launch of the new label, according to PUBG, “marks the next step in PUBG MOBILE’s journey to shake up the gaming and entertainment industry”.

However many users Decentraland has, it’s been one of the most active virtual worlds in exploring partnerships with artists and music companies, and helping them to figure out how performances and artist-branded metaverse experiences can evolve. Its second Metaverse Music Festival, in November, was a showcase for those partnerships, with a mixture of music brands.

Intellectual Property Rights Will be Key in Web3 and NFT Evolution
Despite hiccups, the NFT market continues to expand as we move into 2023. The NFT market is even projected to reach more than $230 billion by 2030. But with the swift rise comes numerous obstacles. Minting an NFT for a virtual asset containing artwork, a song, or trademarks that creators no longer own or have a valid license can land them severe legal trouble.

U.S. Copyright Office Finds ‘Deep Disagreement’ on Anti-Piracy Measures
The U.S. Copyright Office has completed its public consultations on the use of technical measures to identify and protect copyrighted content online. The inquiries triggered responses from a wide variety of stakeholders, both for and against tools such as ‘upload filters’. The Office cautions lawmakers against drastic decisions and sees more benefit in small tweaks and voluntary agreements.
