The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act seeks to level the playing field by allowing local newspapers, broadcasters and other online publishers to negotiate collectively for an annual content fee from Google and Meta/Facebook, which dominate the digital advertising market. The full text of the Senate bill, released Monday, cites a power imbalance that has benefited Big Tech at the expense of the shrinking newspaper industry.

AB 2799 ‘Rap Lyrics’ Law Officially Passes California Legislature

Last week, the major labels voiced support for AB 2799, a California bill that would limit criminal liability stemming from “creative expression” – including rap lyrics – in certain instances. Now, the legislation has passed through both chambers of the Golden State’s legislature and made its way to the governor’s desk. If approved by the governor, AB 2799 would become the first state law of its kind.

George Lopez is the latest comedian to sue Pandora for unpaid royalties

The lawsuits are piling up for Pandora, which has been accused by comedians, including Lewis Black and Andrew Dice Clay, of streaming their works without the proper license. Now, George Lopez is joining the fray, seeking $5.5 million from the streamer. Lopez filed suit on Tuesday, claiming that Pandora streamed two of his comedy albums, Right Now Right Now and Team Leader, without paying him royalties or obtaining the proper licenses from him.

Fans can now pay to access their favorite artist’s music before it’s officially released on Audiomack

Gordon Lightfoot, Janis Joplin ‘Commission Rights’ Sold to ICM

The ICM Crescendo Music Royalty Fund has acquired manager Albert Grossman’s commission stake in works from Janis Joplin and Gordon Lightfoot. Higher-ups at the ICM Crescendo Music Royalty Fund, which arrived on the scene in 2020 and is based out of Calgary, just recently unveiled the purchase. Strategically, ICM CMRF has made clear its objective of “acquiring entertainment rights that generate revenue generated from streaming platforms such as YouTube, Spotify and Pandora.”

YouTube is the most-used podcasting platform

According to data from Luminate’s Podcast 360 report YouTube is the most-used platform for podcasts, with 78 percent of US podcast listeners 13 and older saying they have used the streamer for their shows. That puts it ahead of heavyweights like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. The findings reflect the same trend reported by Cumulus in May, which reported YouTube snagging the number one spot from Spotify.
