News media bargaining code: New publisher alliance takes on big tech down under

This week, Q News and 17 other small Australian news publishers clubbed together to form the Public Interest Publishers Alliance, which wants to collectively negotiate licensing deals with Google and Facebook. With support from the Minderoo Foundation – the charity of mining billionaire Andrew Forrest – the group will take advantage of new collective bargaining rules recently introduced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Spotify says 200K Artists are Using the Fan Support Feature

Spotify has renamed its Artist Fundraising Pick feature to Fan Support and shared some statistics showing more than 200,000 artists are using it. 90% of the artists with a Fan Support link on their profile use the feature to collect donations from fans, while 10% use it to raise money for their chosen charity or cause. When the feature launched in 2020, Spotify intended it “as a way for listeners to directly contribute to the personal causes and needs of artists.”

Jonas Brothers Launch Smartphone-Only Video Subscription Service on Scriber

The Jonas Brothers are giving fans a new way to access exclusive videos — charging $5 per month for the privilege — on Scriber, a smartphone-based subscription startup. Jonas Brothers followers who subscribe via Scriber are promised “unique, behind-the-scenes videos and updates” directly from the singing trio.

After launching a Roblox activation called Spotify Island earlier in May, the audio platform is already expanding its latest virtual space. A colorful new area called K-Park will serve fans of Korean pop music while also solidifying Spotify’s status as the “first music-streaming brand to have a presence on Roblox.”

Matt Pincus’ MUSIC raises $200m, as it eyes record label, publishing, tech and Web3 investments

Calling itself “the first ever diversified investment company focused exclusively on music businesses”, MUSIC has raised $200 million in “initial” capital as it officially re-launches as a partnership between Pincus and Liontree, plus two new investors – JS Capital Management and Schusterman Family Investments.

CISAC reports global progress on metadata and plans wider access to ISWC music identifier

The 2022 report highlights the Confederation’s diverse services including lobbying, development of best practices, technology, and the systems to support data exchanges, help identify works and pay royalties quickly and accurately. CISAC has reported “steady progress” for the extension of the ISWC music identifier and improvements in music data reporting. It follows a major upgrade to the system completed in 2020.

Justin Timberlake sells song catalog to Hipgnosis and its $1bn-backed Blackstone fund

Hipgnosis says it has acquired “100% of all of Timberlake’s copyright, ownership and financial interests of the Writer and Publisher’s Share of Public Performance income, and the catalog of musical compositions written by Justin Timberlake”. Also included in the sale to Hipgnosis are the worldwide administration rights to the compositions, subject to the remaining Term of Universal Music Publishing Group’s administration rights.
