Epic is well known for bringing musical performances to Fortnite, including spectacular shows for huge artists like Travis Scott and Ariana Grande and concerts hosted on the non-violent party royale island. But Epic is increasingly working with its community to create signature experiences for the game in Fortnite’s Creative mode, such as with this summer’s Easy Life virtual concert and the Balenciaga-themed “Strange Times” hub.

Global Song Streams Are Up 25.9% This Year, Says MRC Study of Worldwide Music Trends

For 2021 to date, global music streaming is up by a remarkable 25.9% from the same period in 2020, according to a new study of international music trends from MRC Data. The total amount of on-demand audio song streams from January through August of this year was 1.7 trillion, as opposed to 1.4 trillion during the first eight months of last year.

Netflix Releases New Data on Most Popular TV Shows and Movies

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer, revealed what he said was the “most comprehensive look so far” at the streamer’s top 10 TV shows and movies. Shonda Rhimes’ “Bridgerton” Season 1 scored as the No. 1 series based on both number of Netflix households and time spent viewing while “Extraction” was the most-viewed film in terms of households and “Bird Box” was the most-watched movie in terms of hours.

3LAU’s Worst Case to be the first “fan owned” song on blockchain music platform Royal

DJ and cryptocurrency pundit 3Lau will give away 50% of his new song Worst Case’s streaming rights to 333 fans, who will get paid every time someone streams the song. With this move, 3LAU means to demonstrate the capabilities of Royal, which launched with $16 million in seed funding earlier this year. According to 3LAU, Royal was created with the aim of democratizing investment in music.

Warner Music Group and Twitch ink ‘first-of-its-kind’ partnership

The agreement with Warner Music Group’s recorded music business will see the launch of WMG artist channels, including Warner Records stars Bella Poarch and Saweetie and Atlantic Records’ viral breakout singer/producer Sueco, featuring exclusive content and behind-the-scenes material. A standalone WMG music space featuring premium music-centric programming will also be created and promises to be “an up-to-the-minute exclusive experience.”

Ed Sheeran Deploys Blockchain Tech to Fight Scalpers In France

The Ed Sheeran concert at Stade de France is happening on July 29, 2022. But tickets for the event are available now. However, there are some special notes about the ticket purchasing process for this concert. “For this concert, in order to make ticketing secure, the tickets purchased will only be available as the concert approaches via a mobile app you will be invited to download on your smartphone,” the concert page reads.

WMG and Epic Games invest in music licensing startup Lickd

UK firm Lickd is one of the startups trying to make it easier for YouTubers and other online creators to license commercial music to use in their videos. Now it has raised £5.1m of funding from some very interesting investors: Warner Music Group, Fortnite publisher (and Apple nemesis) Epic Games, and the investment firm of Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, which led the round.

NMPA and Roblox Settle Copyright Suit, Launch Music Licensing Talks

A week after signing a long-awaited agreement with Twitch, the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) has struck a deal with Roblox, resolving the $200 million copyright infringement lawsuit it launched against the gaming platform in June. The deal settles claims filed by NMPA members over music use on the platform and lets NMPA members opt-in to a negotiation period during which they will individually set up go-forward music licensing deals with Roblox.

Warner Music now generating over $270m from ‘alternative’ platforms annually

Speaking during an interview at the Goldman Sachs‘ Communacopia event this afternoon, Cooper confirmed that Warner Music Group’s recorded music operation has a present run-rate of $235 million per year in revenue from “alternative offerings that create new use cases for music”.
