After more than three years of litigation, it took judge John G. Koeltl just hours to sign off on the parties’ negotiated consent judgment—but not without a final twist. In a short written opinion made public yesterday, Koeltl sided with the Internet Archive in a final dispute, limiting the scope of the permanent injunction to cover only the plaintiffs’ print books that also have electronic editions available.

A new interactive contract representing about 2,500 performers is being negotiated, members of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee said. The interactive media agreement covers “off-camera (voiceover) performers, on-camera (motion capture, stunt) performers, stunt coordinators, singers, dancers, puppeteers, and background performers,” according to SAG-AFTRA.

OpenAI claims it has implemented filters ensuring that sources behind paywalls, those collecting personally identifiable information, or any content violating OpenAI’s policies will not be accessed by GPTBot. The OpenAI docs also give instructions about how to block GPTBot from crawling websites using the industry-standard robots.txt file, which is a text file that sits at the root directory of a website and instructs web crawlers (such as those used by search engines) not to index the site.

Record labels including UMG, Capitol and Sony have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in the United States targeting Internet Archive and founder Brewster Kale, among others. Filed in Manhattan federal court late Friday, the complaint alleges infringement of 2,749 works, recorded by deceased artists, including Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby.

Google and Universal Music Group in talks over licensing AI ‘deepfakes’ (report)

Google and Universal Music Group are in talks to secure licenses for artists’ vocals and musical melodies to create artificial intelligence-generated songs, The Financial Times reported Tuesday (August 8). The report added that Warner Music Group is also engaged in negotiations with Google regarding a similar initiative. Talks between Google and Universal Music are at an early stage and no immediate product launch is anticipated, the newspaper said.
