EU ‘final’ talks to fix AI rules to run into 2nd day; deal on foundation models at hand

The text of the proposal requires foundational model makers to put in place a policy to respect EU copyright law, including with regard to limitations copyright holders have placed on text and data mining. Plus they must provide a “sufficiently detailed” summary of training data used to build the model and make it public — with a template for the disclosure being provided by the AI Office, an AI governance body the regulation proposes to set up.

WMG CEO: EU shouldn’t miss opportunity to include transparency and record-keeping rules in AI Act

The text from the European Parliament proposes light-touch transparency and record-keeping obligations for enormously popular technologies like ChatGPT. Requiring generative AI companies to comply with these transparency and record-keeping requirements will boost the value of AI in Europe and provide the creative community with the means to ensure their rights are being respected and are not being used without authorization.

UK Patent Office AI ruling: ‘A whole new era’

A recent ruling in the English High Court could be significant for AI companies – music-tech startups included. The ruling last month overturned a previous decision by the UK Patent Office. The change means that startups can now patent their training mechanisms, as well as their final trained systems. “AI music startups couldn’t patent their innovations before because they were being misinterpreted through a legacy vocabulary and understanding,” Dacci CEO Rachel Lyske said.

AI and the English Major

On the surface, the situation for English majors might appear to be dire. If computers can write (and write well enough that few can tell the difference), what’s the point? But dig a little deeper, and the English major becomes more valuable, not less. “The more the boundaries between human and AI feel blurry, the more important it will be to have somebody who’s been educated with a kind of sophisticated sense of the full range of creative possibilities of the human mind,” said Colby College English Professor Aaron Hanlon.
