No, Generative AI is not the end of art or photography

While it will never be the same, generative AI will certainly not destroy photography or any visual art. In fact, it might just do the opposite. We, human beings, like computers, learn by copying. Great artists all started by admiring a previous artist and copying them until they found their own style. They watch and learn from seeing others’ artwork exactly how generative AI currently learn from large repository of visual content. Nothing different.

“Art is dead Dude” – the rise of the AI artists stirs debate

A number of new artificial intelligence systems turn simple text prompts into striking images. Some artists were already fearful that a new breed of AI image generator could take their jobs, and take a free ride on the years spent learning their craft. “This thing wants our jobs, it’s actively anti-artist”, wrote California-based movie and game concept artist RJ Palmer in a Tweet liked more than 25,000 times.

Algorithms Can Now Mimic Any Artist. Some Artists Hate It

As access to AI art generators begins to widen, more artists are raising questions about their capability to mimic the work of human creators. David Oreilly, a digital artist who has been critical of DALL-E, says the idea of using these tools that feed on past work to create new works that make money feels wrong. “They don’t own any of the material they reconstitute,” he says. “It would be like Google Images charging money.”
