Recorded music consumption in the UK grew by 4.3% in 2022

British music industry body the BPI has published its annual figures for recorded music consumption in the UK, which grew by 4.3% in 2022. The BPI’s figures show that the number of ‘album equivalent sales’ – a metric that uses a formula to blend streams with sales of digital and physical music – was 166.1m last year, up from 159.3m in 2021.

Weekly U.S. Vinyl Album Sales Break Modern-Era Record

U.S. vinyl album sales hit a modern-era high in the week ending Dec. 22, as 2.232 million copies were sold, according to Luminate. That marks the single-largest sales week for vinyl albums since Luminate began electronically tracking music sales in 1991. It’s also only the second time in the modern era (1991-onward) that weekly vinyl album sales have exceeded 2 million.

Original Content Spending Growth Forecast To Slump In 2023

On a global basis, overall investment in original content for streaming and broadcasting will increase by just 2% in 2023, projects media analyst firm Ampere Analysis. That would be the lowest growth rate in a decade, with the exception of a COVID-driven slump in 2020. In contrast, original content expenditures are estimated to have grown 6%, to $238 billion, in 2022, driven primarily by subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms.

PUBG Mobile, a free mobile game that’s been downloaded over a billion times outside of China, is launching its own label, called ‘Beat Drop’. PUBG has already been releasing its own original music since 2020 via a virtual band called POWER 4 (see video below), and the launch of the new label, according to PUBG, “marks the next step in PUBG MOBILE’s journey to shake up the gaming and entertainment industry”.

Netflix’s Ad-Supported Tier Was Its Least Popular Plan, Analytics Firm Estimates

Netflix’s new ad-supported plan was the least popular tier of its service in November, the first month in which the streaming giant offered it. The plan accounted for 9% of new Netflix sign-ups in the U.S. during the month. Some 57% of subscribers to the ad-supported tier in the first month were people re-joining the service or signing up for the first time, while 43% downgraded from pricier plans, according to Antenna.

Streaming’s Golden Age Is Suddenly Dimming

The never-ending supply of new programming that helped define the streaming era appears to finally be slowing. The number of adult scripted series ordered by TV networks and streaming companies aimed for U.S. audiences fell by 24 percent in the second half of this year, compared with the same period last year, according to Ampere Analysis, a research firm. Compared with 2019, it is a 40 percent drop.
