The Web3 community’s continued interest in the music industry shows little sign of waning, and the love affair is starting to feel mutual. Whether it’s Crypto.com signing a deal with Fantagio, MTV creating a virtual space in Roblox, or the new Muse album being released as a chart eligible NFT, it feels like we still only have our toe in the water of the vast pool of potential use cases for blockchain, the metaverse, cryptocurrency and decentralized organizations.

TikTok, Syco, Universal, Samsung Announce StemDrop

TikTok announces the official launch of StemDrop on the platform in collaboration with Syco Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Republic Records, and Samsung, as well as five-time Grammy-winner Max Martin. StemDrop is billed as a new step in global music collaboration and discovery that enables artists and creators to showcase their talent and collaborate easily.

Copyright Office Issues NPRM to Correct MLC’s ‘Erroneous’ Dispute Policy on Post-Termination Blanket License Royalties

On October 25, the U.S. Copyright Office issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) in the Federal Register to clarify the application of the derivative works exception to copyright termination rights within the context of blanket licenses administered under the Music Modernization Act (MMA). The Office is hoping to correct what it sees as a legally erroneous dispute resolution policy established by the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC).

The rules are intended to drive accountability online by streamlining how platforms and marketplaces must tackle illegal content, goods and services.

Pandora’s ‘Cartel’ Claims Tossed Out By Judge In Comedy Copyright Fight

A federal judge has rejected one of Pandora’s key arguments in its legal battle with comedians, dismissing claims that a licensing group called Word Collections was operating as an illegal comedy “cartel.” Pandora claimed that by teaming up with Word Collections to demand such royalties, the comedians were effectively trying to create a “monopolistic portfolio” of comedy rights, aimed at “dramatically increasing” the prices streamers must pay for comedy.

Disney Is Not Looking to Acquire Any Content Companies, CEO Bob Chapek Says

Disney is not currently in the market to buy another studio or network, chief executive officer Bob Chapek said. Disney’s biggest content acquisitions came under its previous CEO, Bob Iger. In 2019, the conglomerate closed its $71 billion deal for 21st Century Fox assets, coming after earlier buying Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm. At this point, Chapek said, “Our plan is to have all our content creation self-contained.”

NBCUniversal Q3 Earnings Rise, Peacock Loss Hits $614M

NBCU grew its studios unit financials, helped by the likes of ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru,’ while the cable systems at its parent company added 14,000 broadband subscribers. Peacock, the streaming service of Comcast’s entertainment unit NBCUniversal, grew its third-quarter revenue strongly, but its loss widened again, while NBCU increased its earnings for the latest period by more than 20 percent.

Global creators’ collections up 5.8% in 2021 but still below pre-COVID levels

Despite a 27.9% rise in digital royalties helped by the growth of subscription streaming, total worldwide collections in 2021 were still 5.3% lower than in 2019. The result illuminates the disastrous impact of the two-year lockdown on live and public performance income, the potential for further digital growth and the urgent need for actions to unlock more value for creators in the streaming market.

YouTube Sees Ad Revenue Drop Slightly to $7.07B During Third Quarter

YouTube’s ad revenue dropped during the third quarter, down nearly 2% compared to the previous year, parent company Alphabet reported on Tuesday. But the video giant isn’t the only tech and social platform to be impacted by a declining digital ad market. Snap reported a net loss of $360 million during Q3 as the company has seen engagement in the U.S. decrease by 5 percent year over year.
