EU lawmakers to push audio-visual sector on geoblocking

European Union lawmakers are considering whether current rules aimed at limiting the practice of geoblocking across the bloc should be extended to cover access to streaming audio-visual content. Pan-European licensing hub ICE and TikTok have agreed a multi-year licensing deal for the musical works represented by the ICE Core. Today’s news follows the announcement at the beginning of the month that the viral app has struck a deal with Sony Music Entertainment, marking the first time that TikTok has announced a licensing agreement with one of the three major recorded music companies.

Book Business Reacts to Simon & Schuster Sale

In a statement on Wednesday, the Authors Guild laid out its opposition to the proposed deal, in which Bertelsmann would acquire S&S from ViacomCBS for $2.2 billion. The sale “would mean that the combined publishing house would account for approximately 50% of all trade books published, creating a huge imbalance in the U.S. publishing industry,” the Guild said.

Twitter Under Fire for Refusal to Attend Senate’s Anti-Piracy Hearing

Bertelsmann to Buy S&S for $2.2 Billion

Bertelsmann has emerged as the winning bidder for Simon & Schuster. In an announcement this morning, the parent company of Penguin Random House said it had reached an agreement to buy S&S from ViacomCBS for $2.175 billion. The deal, which is expected to be completed next year, will combine the country’s largest and third largest trade publishers.
