GESAC streaming report puts spotlight on price point, algorithms and the digital pie

GESAC – the pan-European grouping of song right collecting societies – yesterday published a new report on the streaming market, which provides an overview of the ongoing debates around the economics of streaming, identifying three key areas of concern: price point, algorithms and the good old slicing of the digital pie.

Two thirds of TikTok’s viral hits are sparked by organic content, with no spend on advertising or influencers (report)

Among the tracks on the TikTok Top 200 that eventually reached over a million Spotify streams, 63.8% were from organic posting by the artist and other TikTok users, according to ContraBrand, while 35.5% were artist-generated content and only 9.1% were driven by influencer marketing and only 2.5% were sparked by paid ads.

Obituary: Marybeth Peters, Former Register of Copyrights

Marybeth Peters, who served as the U.S. Register of Copyrights from 1994 to 2010, died on September 29. She was 83.  Peters played a key role in adapting copyright to the digital age, including helping to implement both the 1976 Copyright Act and the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The controversial Google Book Search lawsuit also took place during her tenure, and Peters was critical of the proposed settlement, arguing that it was at odds with the law.

White Supremacist Acts Are ‘Prevalent’ on Spotify, But Streamer Says It’s Working On It

Spotify is vowing to remove racist, anti-semitic and other hate content from its platform following a new report that says music from a number of white supremacist acts is “prevalent” on the service. The report, published by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), found a total of 40 white supremacist acts hosted on Spotify, violating the platform’s rules against “dangerous content.”

Amazon is tightening its ebook return policy to thwart BookTok

Amazon plans to limit automatic ebook returns to cases where people have read no more than 10 percent of the book, according to the Authors Guild. The change, which follows complaints that Kindle buyers were returning titles they’d fully read to get a refund, is expected to take place by the end of the year. In a press release, the guild blamed “BookTok influencers” for encouraging people to get “free” books by buying and then returning them.

Spotify now sells audiobooks

Spotify is bringing audiobooks to its app today. At launch, the feature functions much like a traditional audiobook service, requiring users to buy each book they want to listen to. But the company has teased more unique business models that could come in the future and look more like the freemium approach listeners have become used to with music and podcasts.
