Creator tools are changing the power dynamic of audiences and platforms

As the creator economy grows and matures, platforms which enable users to create and creators to be remunerated properly are going to become increasingly more important – but the relationship between the creators, who are originating on these platforms, and the platforms themselves is not guaranteed to be a sustainable one.

The NFT Royalty Standard EIP-2981 Released to Support Artists

Last month’s most exciting development for the digital space has undoubtedly been the much-coveted EIP-2981 standard. To be specific, EIP-2981’s offering focuses on NFT creators and brings a much-needed solution. It offers to attach royalty information directly to the token itself, and with this makes use of a common data store and computation for all participants to access: the Ethereum blockchain.

Capturing lost intellectual property revenues with blockchain

Well-managed and leveraged IP can provide a company with a strategic advantage over the competition — not only in terms of customer acquisition, but also with investors and potential employees. Yet these valuable assets present a unique set of challenges for organizations wanting to capture the full value of their IP as it scales and matures.

Hollywood Is Starting to Take Blockchain Tech Seriously

The potential of blockchain in the film industry has earned a major vote of confidence from one of Hollywood’s most influential families. The nonprofit Decentralized Pictures — co-founded by Roman Coppola and American Zoetrope exec Michael Musante and led by a board that includes Sofia and Gia Coppola — plans to go live in the fall with a mission to discover and support underrepresented filmmakers using a blockchain-powered web platform.

An AI Helped Write This Play. It May Contain Racism

‘AI’ is the world’s first play written and performed live with an artificial intelligence. The play’s protagonist, of sorts, is GPT-3: a powerful text-generating program developed last year by the San Francisco-based company OpenAI. Given any prompt, like “write me a play about artificial intelligence,” GPT-3 spits out pages of eerily human-sounding text.

Disney’s Profits From ‘Deadpool,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ at Risk in Upcoming Trial

The case has a complicated genesis, but it’s being brought by Rearden, a Silicon Valley company asserting ownership over a visual effects technology called MOVA that captures the facial performance of an actor wearing makeup and processes the data into computer-generated imagery. The judge has allowed Rearden to move forward with a copyright claim based on alleged theft of software on the VFX vendor’s computers.

Serenade pledges to ‘demystify’ NFTs with eco-friendly platform launch

In March, Digital artist Mike Winkelmann, AKA Beeple, sold an NFT artwork through Christie’s auction house for a staggering $69 million. However, as Winkelmann told The Verge, at the time it cost around $5,000 to offset the emissions from one of his collections. Serenade claims its platform produces 1/44,000th of the carbon emitted by a standard NFT, or 1/10th of the energy used to send a tweet.

NFT craze = Dot Com Bubble 2.0?

If one cannot control access to an asset, or enforce rules related to ownership, then nothing is truly owned. An immediate criticism is that these files are being hosted not on the immutable ledgers the sales are recorded on, but instead on third party servers, IPFS or torrents. This criticism of where the file is located is tangential to the actual issue being that the purchaser does not actually have rights or ownership of anything.

Spotify expands its radio DJ-like format, Music + Talk, to global creators

Last fall, Spotify introduced a new format that combined spoken word commentary with music, allowing creators to reproduce the radio-like experience of listening to a DJ or music journalist who shared their perspective on the tracks they would then play. Today, the company is making the format, which it calls “Music + Talk,” available to global creators through its podcasting software Anchor.
