A copyright collective cannot force York University to pay fees for the use of published works in the classroom, given that the school bowed out of a formal arrangement, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled. Access Copyright administers reproduction rights for published works, collects royalties and distributes them to copyright holders.

A bipartisan group of 22 members of the House of Representatives sent a letter Monday to Twitter chief Jack Dorsey, demanding the social network address “the ongoing problem of copyright infringement on Twitter and the platform’s apparent refusal to address it.” They requested a response to their inquiry by Aug. 27.
Facebook has teamed up with French anti-piracy association ALPA up to protect content on its platforms from copyright infringement, the tech giant announced on Monday. As part of this partnership, Facebook will provide ALPA with its video rights identification and management tool known as Rights Manager – which enables it to automatically identify and block content that infringes intellectual property laws on Facebook and Instagram platforms.
France, Spain, Italy and 20 other EU countries may be taken to court for their tardiness in enacting landmark EU copyright rules into national law, the European Commission said on Monday as it asked the group to explain the delays. The Commission said it had sent letters of formal notice, the first step of its infringement proceedings, to the countries group asking for explanations. The deadline for enacting the EU rules was June 7.
