A copyright collective cannot force York University to pay fees for the use of published works in the classroom, given that the school bowed out of a formal arrangement, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled. Access Copyright administers reproduction rights for published works, collects royalties and distributes them to copyright holders.

Google urged to pay news copyright fees in Korea

With countries increasing their efforts to strengthen antitrust regulations on digital platforms, Google is under pressure to pay copyright fees to news organizations for using their content on its platform. Officials in the news industry here said Wednesday that this wave of change is also approaching within Korea, as demands are increasing for a measure to impose a fair levy on overseas IT behemoths.

TikTok dance creators are fighting for the copyrights to their work

Ten Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) choreographers are fighting to get recognition for their dance creations. The initiative is led by JaQuel Knight, who made history earlier this year by becoming the first choreographer to copyright his dance moves – for none other than Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”

Twitter Is Turning a Blind Eye to Copyright Infringement, Group of U.S. Reps Says

A bipartisan group of 22 members of the House of Representatives sent a letter Monday to Twitter chief Jack Dorsey, demanding the social network address “the ongoing problem of copyright infringement on Twitter and the platform’s apparent refusal to address it.” They requested a response to their inquiry by Aug. 27.

Facebook teams up with French anti-piracy association on copyright

Facebook has teamed up with French anti-piracy association ALPA up to protect content on its platforms from copyright infringement, the tech giant announced on Monday. As part of this partnership, Facebook will provide ALPA with its video rights identification and management tool known as Rights Manager – which enables it to automatically identify and block content that infringes intellectual property laws on Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Commission starts legal action against 23 EU countries over copyright rules

France, Spain, Italy and 20 other EU countries may be taken to court for their tardiness in enacting landmark EU copyright rules into national law, the European Commission said on Monday as it asked the group to explain the delays. The Commission said it had sent letters of formal notice, the first step of its infringement proceedings, to the countries group asking for explanations. The deadline for enacting the EU rules was June 7.

Universal Music Group inks licensing deal with TikTok rival Lomotif

Universal Music Group has signed a licensing deal with Singapore-based video sharing app and TikTok rival, Lomotif. As first reported by the Financial Times, UMG and Lomotif, which has been downloaded over 225 million times globally, have been negotiating a deal since 2016. Lomotif counts 31m MAUs (monthly active users) in 200 territories and 300m videos are being watched on its app each month.
