Universal Music Group Inks Partnership Deal With NFT Platform Curio

The Big Three record label and two-year-old Curio – which was co-founded by former Universal Music Group, Universal Pictures, and Google higher-up Ben Arnon – announced their pact today. Having dropped its inaugural NFTs in February of 2021, Curio is now working with UMG on a “first issue” involving Capitol’s Calum Scott. These NFTs are expected to launch sometime next month, with “more details” to arrive “in the coming weeks.”

Steve Aoki Says He’s Made More Money With NFTs Than From 10 Years of Music Advances

Under the current economic model, in Aoki’s view, royalties aren’t even worth thinking about, but advances do help artists somewhat. “If I was to really break down, OK, in the 10 years I’ve been making music… six albums, and you [combine] all those advances, what I did in one drop last year in NFTs, I made more money. And also, I was way more unhinged with music,” Aoki said.

The founder of the blockchain-based film sales platform Cinemarket is launching Cineverse, an ambitious start-up that will make it possible for filmmakers, distributors and producers to market films directly using blockchain and NFT tech. Established by Cinemarket CEO Adrian Lugol and partners Vincent Lopez and Daniel Siegler, Cineverse will allow users to buy, share, gift, sell and resell films over the platform.

Amazon and Spotify mull bids for London-listed podcaster Audioboom

Amazon and Spotify are considering rival takeover approaches for Audioboom, the London-listed podcasting group which has seen revenues and its share price surge during the pandemic. Sky News has learnt that the two digital behemoths have been exploring bids for Audioboom in recent weeks, and could decide whether to make formal offers as soon as this month.

Google’s ‘stranglehold’ on online ads targeted by EU publishers in complaint

Google was hit with an antitrust complaint from a coalition of publishers in the European Union on Friday, who argued that the company has “stranglehold” over the online ad market that threatens the news industry. The European Publishers Council — which includes the CEOs of The New York Times, Axel Springer, News UK and Condé Nast — wrote that Google has established a grip over the online ad market by illegally stifling competition.
