Big Tech’s Liability Shield Is Under Siege

House lawmakers are moving ahead with legislation making internet platforms more accountable to online users, in what is expected to be a showdown between Washington and Silicon Valley. At a hearing Wednesday on Section 230 bills, House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Frank Pallone (D., N.J.) said the legal protections have played an important role in growing the internet, but also have encouraged the companies to promote divisive and harmful content to draw more users.
