Voss: New EU copyright rules will protect press

The new copyright directive will soon be adopted by the European Parliament. Within this framework, internet platforms will be held to account more stringently for copyrighted content uploaded to their websites by their users. In addition, the economic independence of the press from these platforms will be ensured by a specific law for press publishers.

When getting rights clearance is tough

If what you have is a photograph or a video or a sound recording, there may not be an unambiguous title to search on . . .or an identified creator or owner. Although if what you have is a digital file, you may find some of this information in the metadata. But if what you have is just a photo print or a 70mm IMAX HD film or an audio cassette, determining what to search for is half the battle.

To copy or not to copy: How copyright impacts digital art students and artists

On Feb. 15, Google Images disabled the download image option from their engine in order to prevent copyright infringement because of a previous lawsuit from Getty Images. For many, the change may not be a big deal, but for digital art students, it can mean one less resource to pull from for their work.
