U.S. Congress Doesn’t Plan to Overreact to Generative AI Copyright Challenges

Generative AI is a revolutionary technology that’s expected to change society as we know it but, in parallel, copyright concerns persist. During a House Judiciary IP Subcommittee Hearing yesterday it was made clear that Congress doesn’t plan to overreact. Lawmakers hope to find the middle ground, but that could be easier said than done.

OpenAI stumps in Washington

The biggest and most powerful AI platforms — the “large language models” made by OpenAI and others — are built on massive amounts of existing data, much of which is made by people who had no idea their work would be used to train a piece of software. Front and center for Sen. Marsha Blackburn was the issue of who should own all the AI-generated material produced by large language models trained on copyrighted works.

ChatGPT’s Sam Altman Calls on Congress to Adopt Safety Standards for AI Systems

The chief executive of ChatGPT creator OpenAI called on Congress to create licensing and safety standards for advanced artificial-intelligence systems, as lawmakers begin a bipartisan push toward regulating the powerful new artificial-intelligence tools available to consumers. Congress wants to regulate AI, but it has a lot of catching up to do

For the past several weeks, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has met with at least 100 experts in artificial intelligence to craft groundbreaking legislation to install safeguards. The New York Democrat is in the earliest stages of talking to members of his own party and Republicans to gauge their interest in getting behind a new proposed AI law.

Audio Book Narrators Say AI Is Already Taking Away Business

As people brace for the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence on jobs and everyday living, those in the world of audio books say their field is already being transformed. AI has the ability to create human-sounding recordings — at assembly-line speed — while bypassing at least part of the services of the human professionals who for years have made a living with their voices.

Google makes its text-to-music AI public

When Google previewed MusicLM in an academic paper in January, it said that it had “no immediate plans” to release it. But in the intervening months, Google says it’s been working with musicians and hosting workshops to “see how [the] technology can empower the creative process.” One of the outcomes? The version of MusicLM in AI Test Kitchen won’t generate music with specific artists or vocals. Make of that what you will.

TV’s War With the Robots Is Already Here

The debate over A.I. in screenwriting is often simplified as, “Could a chatbot write the next ‘Twin Peaks’?” No, at least for now. Nor would anyone necessarily want it to. The bulk of TV production has no interest in generating the next “Twin Peaks” — that is, a wild, confounding creative risk. It is interested in more reboots, more procedurals, more things similar to what you just watched.

Artificial intelligence and the film and television writers’ strike

The writers’ strike—a component of the growing movement of workers internationally across all industries—is against the world’s most powerful capitalist media conglomerates. It involves both the methods and the content of movies and TV series that are watched in theaters, living rooms and, increasingly, on mobile devices by billions of people around the globe.
