Influence Media Partners launches $100m fund to invest in catalogs of female music creators

New York-based music and entertainment investment firm Influence Media Partners has launched a new fund to invest in what it describes as “award-winning catalogs of some of music’s most influential female music creators”. The new fund carries an initial value of up to $100 million and has been established in partnership with independent professional retirement services company Municipal Employment Retirement System (MERS of Michigan).

Apple leads $50m investment round in UnitedMasters

UnitedMasters says that the investment will fuel its “mission to enable artists to maintain full ownership over their work while expanding their economic opportunity and introducing them to millions of new fans.” The move also marks another step from Apple into the independent artist space, following its acquisition of prominent artist services, A&R and distribution company Platoon in 2018.

Anyone can claim a digital photo or painting as their own by attaching a token to it, even if they didn’t create it. And while all transactions on the blockchain are recorded publicly in an immutable digital ledger, there is no requirement that people attach their real names or identities to those transactions, which makes it much harder to get recourse if your work is stolen or compromised.

Songwriter Group Tells Artists to Stop Claiming Credit on Songs They Didn’t Write

The Pact, a newly formed songwriting group, has called for artists to cease claiming credit on songs that they didn’t author. The debut message that The Pact directed towards the now-standard practice of giving songwriting credit to non-contributing artists (and, in some instances, others who are not involved with the writing process) consists of eight slides, the first of which features text asking: “How does an ARTIST make money?”

ConsenSys Lines Up Damien Hirst to Launch New NFT Art Protocol 

ConsenSys announced on Tuesday a new NFT protocol called Palm, along with an NFT studio for artists and others to spur the protocol’s development. The first artist on board with Palm is Damien Hirst. The protocol is the result of a partnership between ConsenSys, the movie studio Heyday Films, and HENI, a multi-pronged art services company that manages Hirst.

Spotify acquires talk app Locker Room to take on Clubhouse

Today, Spotify has announced its entrance into the social audio business in a big way, via the acquisition of Betty Labs, the creators of Locker Room, a sports-focused, live talk app. Spotify says that this acquisition “builds on its work to create the ‘future formats of audio’ and will accelerate Spotify’s entry into the live audio space”.

Digital Millennium Copyright Act wasn’t intended to provide blanket immunity for YouTube, Facebook or Twitch. As is, the DMCA has outlived its effectiveness as well as its original purpose. Additionally, many of the reasons DMCA immunity was created no longer exist. However, improving the DMCA so it is administered in a fair, practical, and cost-effective manner requires a multidimensional approach.
