For Musicians, Screen Time Is a Growing Source of Income

Revenue from placements of music in visual media, called synchronizations or “sync,” is a small but rapidly growing part of the recorded-music business. Such licenses generated $285.5 million in the U.S. for record labels in 2018, up 23% from the prior year, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
